Chemist - Industrial Coatings and Wood Finishes

Our client is at the forefront of surface coatings technology and committed to developing innovative solutions for over 120 years. As a pioneer of quality industrial coatings and woodfinishes, they are committed to continuing research and development to produce leading edge coating technology.

Due to expansion in the company, they are seeking to recruit an experienced Industrial Development Chemist to join their Research and Development laboratory to fully support the manufacturing department in product testing, process monitoring, formulation, and problem investigation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Development of new and innovative coatings from formulation through to application and testing of experimental coatings compositions and their successful implementation into production.
  • Reformulation and improvement of existing products where necessary
  • Research and sourcing of new raw materials via supplier network
  • Evaluation of alternative raw materials
  • Keeping abreast of legislative changes and technology advances
  • Provision of technical support for ‘in house’ production/manufacturing procedures
  • Creation of R&D reports and presentations
  • Documentation of laboratory results in a professional, methodical and scientific manner
  • Maintenance of excellent housekeeping and H&S procedures

 

Candidate Profile

  • The ideal candidate will need to have a degree level qualification in Polymer Technology, Chemistry or Similar
  • Experience in solvent based & waterborne coatings
  • Experience in Flame Retardant coatings
  • Good colour vision is advantageous.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, to work effectively with colleagues and to explain complex techniques to production and other labs.
  • Experience in providing presentations, writing R&D reports, technical reports and demonstrating coating techniques.
  • The ability to work as part of a team as well as independently
  • Ability to work to deadlines and within financial parameters

Competitive salary, 20 days annual leave rising by an extra day per year up to max 25 days, pension 3% (employer) / 5% (employee), 39hr week Monday to Friday (early finish Friday) but hours can be flexible and part time position will also be considered.
